 As most of you should know by now, poker is a game of skill with an extra bit of luck thrown in here and there. At the end of the day, we have no control over what cards are going to come out, but we can control the way we bet, check raise and so on to make the most profitable decisions at the poker table. Poker is a game for the player that assesses all of the options available to them and makes decisions based on their knowledge of the game and their opponents. This means that in general, a thinking player is a winning player.
If you are able to keep a clear head and focus on every hand you play, it won’t be long before you develop the skills to consistently make money from poker. So it takes a certain type of person to be able to think through every situation at the poker table carefully, and then use their knowledge to make the best play possible. Out of all of the candidates of different groups of people that would make the best poker players, I am fairly confident that University and College students would make it into the top tier.
Why do students make the best poker players?
Well, put simply, people don’t make it to University or College through a lack of effort or ability. It takes hard work and determination to achieve the right grades to make it into higher education, along with the drive to learn more about a chosen subject to give them a better chance at landing a job that they would like to pursue. It is these sorts of qualities that make students almost perfect candidates to develop into winning poker players.
To be a great poker player, you have to be constantly learning new aspects of the game every day. As a student, you are not unfamiliar to education, and so learning about the game of poker should be pretty much second nature after you get involved with the game. Your mind is at its peak to soak up information and solve problems based on the information you can gather, which is almost the perfect combination for any aspiring poker player.
You have to be able to use your head in poker, and think outside the box to work out what your opponents may be holding, and bet accordingly to help maximize your wins. Students have the ability to consider all the factors in any given situation, and use their logic to come out with a solution to a problem that they may be facing. You may not realise it, but you are a lot cleverer than you think, even if you are not at the top of the class. As a student your intellectual ability is far above the majority of many other people you come across, and so you shouldn’t have trouble in outwitting opponents at the poker table if you put your mind to it.
The only drawback I can think of being a student is that you may be relatively inexperienced in the game of poker. However, this is something that can be easily changed through practice and your will to develop your game to higher and higher levels. Especially because you are a student, the time it takes for you to become a great poker player should be significantly shorter than if you were to take up the game at an older age. As a student you are in your prime to learn, and so really the time is now if you want to win money from poker from now and for the rest of your life.
Being at a young age can only work to your advantage at the end of the day, even if you currently know very little about the game. You have from now on to learn as much as you can about the game and be able to consistently win money. So say for example it takes you a few months to start winning money on a regular basis; you have the rest of your life to continue to win money, as its not going to be a skill that you will forget. Your game might not be as sharp if you don’t play for a few years, but the basic instincts are still going to be there, and you’re always going to have a tool to make a little money here and there whenever you want to.
