If you are a regular player at the low stakes tables, you may find that the amount you win overall is quite small in relation to the number of hours you put in at the tables. However, there is a simple and incredibly effective way to increase the amount of money you are winning per hour, which is to play multiple tables at a time.
The great thing about online poker is that you are able to open up and play at more than one table at a time, which is something that is impossible (or incredibly difficult to do) at live casino tables. A large number of online winning poker players will regularly sit down at 2 or more tables to increase the amount of money they are winning per hour, and so it makes sense to give it a try in an attempt to increase your own win rate if you know that you are a winning poker player.
The only difficulty that will be encountered through multi-tabling is that your ability to focus on your opponents and make reads will deteriorate. This is because the amount of time you have to spend studying your opponents will be reduced, as your attention will often be required at another table before you are able to watch your opponents play through a hand and analyse the way they played it.
Multi-tabling Tips
The way to overcome this slight problem is to play simple ABC poker, where you bet your strong hands and fold your weak hands. By doing this you will take out the need for reads in your game, and you should be able to avoid any tricky situations that rely on you to make a read on your opponent for a large number of your chips. However, because you have taken out the option of being able to make reads on your opponents to influence your decision on marginal calls and folds, you will find that your win rate will become slightly reduced. But if you are playing at the lower limits, you should find that it is easier to play profitable ABC poker without reads than you would be able to at some of the higher limits, so your win rate will not be too far reduced.
So if you are winning 10BB an hour at one table, you may find that by playing at 4 tables simultaneously your win rate will decrease to 6BB per hour at each of the individual tables. But this is not necessarily a bad thing, as you will not be winning a total of 24BB an hour at each of the tables combined, which is more than double what you would be winning if you just played at one table at a time. So as long as you maintain a good positive overall win rate at each of the tables you are playing at, you should find that you would be winning more money in the long run.
If you intend on giving multi-tabling a try, I recommend that you start off with multi-tabling two tables to start with, and then work your way up to 3, 4 and so on. By doing this you will be able to find out which number of tables you feel most comfortable with, and so you can stick to multi-tabling that number of tables in every session you play from their onwards.
I feel most at ease with playing at 4 tables myself, as it allows me to fit all of the tables on one screen without overlap, and I am able to keep up with the action at each of the tables as it progresses. But I know of a number of other players that are content with multi-tabling 2 or 3 tables, and a few others that will regularly play at far more than 4 tables at a time in each of their sessions. So it is up to your own personal preference when it comes to multi-tabling, and you shouldn’t force yourself to play at a number of tables that you do not feel comfortable with.
The Titan Poker room offers a tiling feature that will tile the tables across your screen in a mini-mode view, which makes it possible to fit 4 tables on a 1024x768 screen without any overlap. The mini view is well designed and allows you to see all of the actions at the tables with ease, which makes Titan a great room to play at if you intend on playing at multiple tables at a time.
