Yes, if you are a European citizen there is no problem with you being able to gamble and play poker online. There are no laws to prevent you playing online poker as long as you are over the age of 18, and so as a University student you are perfectly fine to set up an online poker account and start playing against players from all over the world.
If you are familiar at all with the world of online poker, you may have heard about the problems that US citizens have with being able to play online poker. In September 2006, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) came into force, which made it difficult for players in the US to fund their online poker accounts legally. There is actually no law that states that it is illegal for American citizens to play poker online, but it is just that there are laws in force that make it illegal to transfer funds from banks to online gaming accounts.
This is why if you play at rooms that still accept US players, you are able to compete against US citizens that are still legally allowed to play. So don’t be too surprised if you notice a few competitors at your table are from Washington or Texas.
The great thing about being a UK student is that you are completely free to gamble as much as you like online, without ever having to worry about having any authorities knocking at your door. Furthermore, there is no tax whatsoever on your gambling winnings. In the US, any online poker winnings would have to have been filed to the IRS by the online poker players, so that tax could be calculated upon it. In the UK however, being a poker pro is not considered a ‘trade’ or a skill, so you do not have to pay tax on any of your winnings.
So don’t worry about setting up an online poker account and playing for real money, as it is well within your rights to do so as long as you are over the age of 18.
