 So now that you know that you are realistically able to win money from online poker, how much is it actually possible for you to win? The money you can win from poker is almost limitless, as there are professional poker players out there winning thousands and even millions on a daily basis. You may have heard of some pros such as Daniel Negreanu and Doyle Brunson; these are the guys that are walking out of casinos and logging off from online rooms with a few hundred thousand dollars added to their accounts. So as you can see, there is a huge amount of money to be won from simply playing poker.
But these kind of figures are for the big players that already have millions in their bank accounts, what about for your standard university student? Well, as a university student you are not going to have vast amounts of money at hand to jump in at the high stakes, but you will certainly have enough to play for some very useful money. If you make a decent deposit of around £25 to your online poker account (which works out as roughly $50), you can comfortably play at the 2c/5c no limit Texas Holdem tables. This may not seem like a lot of money, but when I used to multi-table 6 tables at these limits, I was able to pull in a solid £5 ($10) an hour.
Your own ability to play well along with the amount of money you are playing for are the biggest factors that determine how much you can win. Obviously, if you have more skill than another winning player at the 2c/5c tables, you can expect to win more money per hour. Similarly, if you are playing at the 5c/10c and have a similar ability to another person playing at the 2c/5c, you can again expect to win more money. Another factor, which can affect the amount you win, is whether or not you are multi-tabling. This is because if you are playing at multiple tables at a time, you can expect to win more through combining you total winnings at each of the tables.
 £5 an hour is a great starting point for any student player, as it is probably just below what you would normally be earning at a standard part-time job. But then again, you don’t get to choose your own hours with a job like you can with playing poker. The great thing about poker is that when you win enough, you can move up the limits so that you can start winning more and more. So although you may be starting at the small 2c/5c limits, there is no reason why you can’t shift up the limits to 5c/10c and so on, until you are bringing in quite a substantial amount of money in the $1/$2 games (and it doesn’t even stop there).

This is based on having a decent level of skill at the poker tables, whilst playing at 4 tables simulataneously. Whilst starting out at £3 an hour may seem pretty low, the great thing about poker is that you can move up the limits and make more money. It should take less than a few weeks to move up each limit and start earning more money.
It may take time to reach some of the higher stakes, but the fact of the matter is there is no reason why you can’t eventually hit these levels if you put in the time at the tables and improve your game as you go along through practice and learning good strategy. Every player has to start somewhere, as even the best players in the world earning thousands an hour today were earning a few dollars an hour at some point in their careers. In fact, one poker pro Chris Ferguson set himself a challenge where he started with $1 to try and see how much he could win with such a small starting amount. After about 6 months of play, he had a total bankroll of $10,000, simply from playing poker.
So at the end of the day, you are the only person who is going to decide how much money you are going to make from poker. The money is there for the taking, and its up to you to acquire the ability and money to get your hands on it. The more you practice, the more you can win, it really is as simple as that. Plus the fact that as a winning poker player, you get to decide when you want to make money, rather than being confined to the hours an employer sets you makes it even more worth your while to start learning today.
